PTR's Todd Ulmen: Homestead Karting Spring Championship

(May, 2009) Submitted by Todd Ulmen

Rotax Masters driver Todd Ulmen showed he is the class of the field in Homestead’s Karting Spring Championship once again. Todd, preparing for the summer shootout in Oklahoma in July, brought in master tuner Gary Carlton to help take him to the next level. Gary’s knowledge with the CRG chassis is unmatched and can only help in the future national races to come. Right from the start Todd showed he was the man to beat, qualifying in the #1 spot by over 2/10’s of a second. Working on his race craft Todd and Gary decided he would give up the #1 spot and start last in the pre final, where he would end up finishing 2nd in the race and closing in on the race leader as the checkered flag waved.

In the feature race Todd would again start last and attempt to go last to first. The race went smooth as Todd would go faster in the race than he did in qualifying by almost 3/10’s. Lap after lap he was making his charge to the front of the field, running at least 6/10’s a lap faster than the leader. With only 2 laps to go Todd made a bold move in the hairpin but was unable to make the pass stick as the leader would push him off the track. It looks like it will take last lap heroics to win this race, With only 5 turns left, the pass was made and this time he was able to make the pass stick, going on to win the race by over 1 second.

A special thanks to Homestead Karting for all the help from Tony his gang, also to Gary Carlton for all his hard work and making it such a smooth weekend, we certainly hope to have Gary Cartlon's expertise for the up coming Rotax national races.
